Bentonite is a clay of volcanic origin, extremely plastic and fine, which is added in small quantities to clay bodys and glazes to improve their cohesion, plasticity and stability. It is also very useful for maintaining the suspension in slip and engobes, preventing them from sedimenting.
Bentonite absorbs large quantities of water, which makes it an ideal stabilizer for liquid mixtures such as glazes, facilitating the handling and molding of clays. In large ceramics, its addition helps to avoid the appearance of cracks during drying and shaping.
Interesting Fact
Bentonite has exceptional absorbent properties, can absorb up to five times its weight in water, and is also used in cosmetics, such as facial masks, due to its ability to remove impurities and absorb excess oil from the skin.
Helpful Tip
Only a small amount of bentonite (about 2-3%) is sufficient to improve plasticity in clays. Be careful not to overdo it, as too much can make the clay too sticky and difficult to work.
