To make participation simple, the forum is divided into themed categories. You can hop into whichever topic you like or browse them all. Here are some of the main sections:

  • General Ceramics: For any ceramics-related conversation that doesn’t quite fit in the other sections. This is a great spot to introduce yourself, show off your first pieces, or talk about all things pottery. It’s perfect for breaking the ice and meeting the community.

  • Materials: Dedicated to the raw materials of ceramics. We chat about clays (stoneware, earthenware, porcelain, and more), slips, pigments, grog, and beyond. Looking for a beginner-friendly clay recommendation or tips for making paper porcelain? This is where you’ll find advice and shared experiences on all sorts of materials.

  • Glazes: A whole section just for the mesmerizing world of ceramic glazes. Share your glaze recipes, ask questions about unexpected results (craquelure, wrong color outcomes?), and showcase your experiments with finishes and colors. If you’re into glaze “alchemy,” you’ll feel right at home here, learning everything about glaze techniques and special effects!

  • Tools: The place for workshop gear tips and insights—throwing wheels, kilns, brushes, rollers, molds, even clever homemade texturing devices. We exchange opinions and suggestions on all the tools and equipment you might need, whether you’re just starting out or already at a pro level.

  • Techniques: Here, you’ll find discussions about ceramic methods and processes, both traditional and cutting-edge. From hand-building to wheel-throwing, raku firing, and even 3D printing in ceramics—any technique is fair game. Share your step-by-step approach or pick up new hacks from others: how to throw if you’re left-handed, layer glazes, or get that one-of-a-kind finish.

  • Events: Got the scoop on a workshop, class, exhibition, or ceramics fair? This is the spot to post or find out about these happenings. Whether you’re organizing a local show, taking an exciting course, or want to invite folks to a ceramics market, share it here! It’s the community’s live calendar so we can all stay in the loop on what’s happening in the ceramics world.

  • Buy/Sell: A little marketplace just for potters. Looking for a secondhand kiln? Want to sell a wheel you’re no longer using? This section lets you buy, sell, or trade pottery items, materials, and tools with fellow members. It’s all about lending a hand within the community—maybe someone’s offering exactly the glaze or trimming tools you need, or maybe they could use the supplies you no longer want.

  • Support: Come here for any questions or suggestions about the Smalted platform itself. We’re building this together—if something’s not working right, you need help uploading photos, or you have ideas to improve the forum, let us know! The Smalted team (and other users) are ready to help out and are always grateful for your feedback.

As you can see, the forum covers every aspect of ceramics. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned veteran, everyone is welcome! Smalted’s community is known for being friendly and supportive. You’ll always find someone ready to offer guidance on that tricky wheel-thrown shape, cheer on your latest work, or geek out about the best glaze combos. Our collective knowledge grows with each new post—yours included!
